Aug, '26Moving to university is a big moment. New city. New course. New people. And, perhaps most excitingly, a new place to call home.
Once you've secured your student accommodation, the countdown really begins. But what do you actually need to take to university? What can stay at home? And how can you make moving day as easy as possible?
At Iconinc, we know there's already plenty to think about when starting university. That's why we make student living as effortless as possible, from your own beautifully designed private studio to the thoughtful extras that can be waiting for you when you arrive.
So, before you start filling suitcases, follow the Iconinc student accommodation move-in checklist.
1. Get your important university documents together
Before thinking about bedding, kitchen utensils and your university wardrobe, make sure you have the important stuff covered.
Keep together anything you might need when moving to university, including:
Photo ID
University acceptance and enrolment information
Student finance documents
Bank details
Important medical information
Accommodation documents
Visa and immigration documents, where applicable
Keep everything somewhere easily accessible rather than buried at the bottom of a suitcase.
If you're moving to Iconinc, our dedicated team is there to support you from enquiry through to move-in, helping make your transition into your new home as straightforward as possible.
2. Decide what you actually need to bring
Here's the good news: moving into student accommodation doesn't necessarily mean transporting the entire contents of your bedroom across the country.
Your Iconinc apartment already comes beautifully furnished, with your own kitchen and ensuite bathroom alongside space to sleep, study and relax.
Depending on the Iconinc apartment you choose, you'll also have a full-size double or king-size bed complete with a cloud-like 1,000 pocket sprung mattress.
Before packing something, ask yourself one simple question: will I actually use this?
Clothes, university essentials and a few personal touches? Absolutely.
That box of things that's been sitting untouched under your bed for three years? It can probably stay at home.
3. Make your new Iconinc apartment feel like home
One of the best parts of moving to university is making your new space your own.
Bring a few things that instantly make you feel at home. That might include photographs of family and friends, your favourite blanket, a couple of decorative pieces or the mug you absolutely refuse to drink tea without.
At Iconinc, your apartment is your private retreat.
Whether you choose a sleek Neo, spacious Smart, sociable Elegance or impressive Grande, you'll have your own space to come back to at the end of the day.
Make it yours.
4. Don't want to pack it? Let Iconinc and Unpacked take care of it
Want to make moving day even easier?
Iconinc has partnered with Unpacked to help take the hassle out of moving to university.
Rather than filling the car with duvets, pans, plates and kitchen utensils, Iconinc residents can pre-order essential packs before arriving.
Your order can then be delivered directly to your Iconinc site, ready for your move-in.
That makes Unpacked particularly useful if you're travelling a long distance to university or moving to the UK as an international student. Less luggage. Less shopping when you arrive. Less stress.
Just open the door to your new Iconinc home and start settling in.
5. Get your kitchen essentials sorted
One of the benefits of an Iconinc studio is having your own private kitchen space.
Whether you're making breakfast before a 9am lecture, cooking your favourite meal from home or preparing a midnight snack, you've got the freedom to cook when you want.
You'll usually want the basics, including:
Plates and bowls
Mugs and glasses
Cutlery
Saucepans and frying pans
Cooking utensils
Chopping board
Tea towels
Food storage containers
Don't want to bring it all yourself?
The Unpacked Student Kitchen Pack available to Iconinc residents brings together kitchen essentials in one convenient package. The existing Iconinc and Unpacked offering includes cookware, crockery, cutlery, utensils, glassware and other everyday kitchen items.
And because you can arrange it before moving, there's no emergency shopping trip on your first night.
Your first Iconinc dinner can be considerably more exciting than a supermarket meal deal.
6. Get your bedding ready for that first night's sleep
After unpacking, meeting new people and exploring your new surroundings, you're probably going to be ready for a good night's sleep.
Luckily, Iconinc has already taken care of one important part.
Our private studios feature supportive 1,000 pocket sprung mattresses, with full-size double or king-size beds depending on your apartment type.
Then you need the bedding.
You can bring your own, or make things considerably easier by pre-ordering an Unpacked Bedding Pack.
The Unpacked option promoted to Iconinc residents includes essentials such as a duvet, pillows, fitted sheet, duvet cover, pillowcases and mattress protection.
Order ahead and your bedding can be delivered ready for your arrival.
No duvet taking up half your car. No wrestling an enormous bedding bag onto a train. And if you're flying into the UK, no wasting precious suitcase allowance.
7. Remember your university essentials
You are going to university, after all.
Make sure you've packed everything you'll need for lectures and studying:
Laptop or tablet
Chargers
Headphones
Notebooks
Pens
Backpack
Course-specific equipment
But remember, studying at Iconinc doesn't have to mean spending every evening sitting at the desk in your apartment.
Depending on your Iconinc location, you'll find dedicated study rooms, pods and booths alongside iMac stations, WiFi and printing facilities.
Need to concentrate? Find your favourite quiet study spot.
Working on a group presentation? Get your coursemates together.
Finished for the day? Close the laptop, leave the study space and switch off.
8. Pack for life outside the lecture theatre
University life should be about much more than your degree.
So pack for everything else too.
Bring your gym kit, trainers, going-out clothes and anything you need for your hobbies.
At Iconinc, you'll have plenty of opportunities to use them.
Iconinc gyms make fitting exercise around lectures easier, while our wider communal spaces give you somewhere to relax and socialise without leaving home.
Depending on your Iconinc location, that could mean a film in the cinema, a catch-up in the social lounges, some competition in the games room or time relaxing in the wellness facilities.
Pack for the university experience you want to have.
9. Add those things you always forget
Phone charger? Hopefully.
Toothbrush? Probably.
But there are always a few things that don't make it into the suitcase.
Think about:
Towels
Hairdryer
Extension leads, where permitted
Laundry bag
Toiletries
Medication
Reusable water bottle
Umbrella – this is the UK, after all
Unpacked also allows Iconinc residents to personalise their order with additional essentials and comforts. Previous options have included items such as towels, storage, a hairdryer, desk fan and even an air fryer.
It's worth checking the current options before you start buying everything individually.
10. What don't you need to pack when you're living at Iconinc?
This is where your university packing list gets considerably easier.
At Iconinc, we believe great student accommodation should make everyday life better.
That's why the Iconinc experience goes far beyond simply providing your apartment.
Depending on your location, residents can benefit from facilities and extras including gyms, dedicated study spaces, cinemas, social lounges and wellness facilities alongside thoughtful additions such as hot drinks, Grab & Go breakfast, Fresh Veg Fridays, resident events, parcel handling and Iconinc perks and treats.
Combine that with the option to have essentials from Unpacked delivered ready for move-in, and starting university suddenly feels much simpler.
We've thought about the little things so you can concentrate on the big things.
11. Prepare for your first week at Iconinc
Your first few days at university can fly by.
Between unpacking, enrolling, exploring your campus and trying to remember everyone's name, there's a lot happening.
Make time to explore your new Iconinc home too.
Find your favourite study spot. Check out the gym. Explore the communal spaces. Introduce yourself to the Iconinc team. Most importantly, say hello to the people living around you.
Community is a huge part of the Iconinc experience.
Our Welcome Week activities help residents get to know their new home, meet the Iconinc team and start connecting with the people they'll be living alongside.
You might arrive knowing nobody.
Give it a week and things could look very different.
12. Get to know your new university city
Moving to university isn't only about discovering a new campus.
You've got a whole new city waiting outside your Iconinc front door.
Iconinc offers student accommodation in Leeds, Liverpool, Lincoln and Glasgow, putting you in some of the UK's most exciting student cities.
Spend your first few weeks finding your favourite coffee shop, discovering the quickest route to lectures, trying local restaurants and figuring out where you'll be spending your weekends.
Before long, it won't feel like a new city.
It'll simply feel like home.
Moving to Iconinc? Make move-in easier
Moving away to university should feel exciting, not exhausting.
That's why Iconinc is designed to take care of more than just where you sleep.
Choose your private Iconinc studio, get your university essentials together and, if you'd rather leave the bulky stuff behind, arrange your Unpacked essentials before you arrive.
They'll be delivered to your Iconinc site ready for move-in, leaving you with less to pack and more time to enjoy the moment.
Then all that's left is to arrive, unpack and start your next chapter.
Live well. Feel good. Do great.
