Leeds is know throughout the UK for its fantastic nightlife. If you are planning on studying in Leeds, you certainly won’t be disappointed with the evening entertainment. It’s one of the UK’s top clubbing destinations, and a great place to go clubbing outside of London.

Leeds is generally a very laid back city

However, if you are planning on spending a night on the town in pubs and clubs, you might need to consider your outfit a little more carefully.

Most clubs will let you in as long as you aren’t wearing a scruffy pair of trainers. If you want to stay on the safe side and avoid being turned away, it’s best to avoid wearing trainers, even if they are fairly smart. Obviously the specific dress code depends on where abouts you are planning on going.

The bouncers in Leeds are known for being a tad fussy over who they let in. If you want to make life easier for yourself then it’s best to dress to impress rather dressing down.

Many student friendly venues won’t have a very strict dress code. However, there might be a few high end bars where you should be more on the smart side of smart casual. In most pubs, bars and clubs you will get away with a respectable smart casual.

Leeds has a quirky side to it

If your fashion sense is a little alternative, don’t be afraid to wear something different. The local residents in Leeds seem to have quite a laid back dress code. If you like to dress on the casual side, you won’t feel out of place. The best thing to do is plan ahead, and check whether there is a dress code in the bar of club you plan on going to. Here’s a few examples of clubs in Leeds and what they expect you to wear:

Pizm - We ask that our customers arrive smartly dressed and keep it stylish, fashionable and fresh but we do make a decision on an individual basis. We advise against wearing sports or gym style trainers, however we do accept some pumps like Converse and Vans.

Chillit White - Our dress policy is smart, no hats, caps or tracksuits and no football tops. Managers and security staff have the right to refuse entry to the venue at any time.

Most major nightclubs and student venues in the city will follow the same sort of rules. You will gradually get to know the city and discover which places have a more relaxed dress code. Some bars really don’t mind what you turn up in, for example The Wardrobe Bar says ‘By the way, there’s no dress code, never has been.’

Students often like to go out in fancy dress, especially during fresher’s week. If you aren’t going to a known student club or pub then you might want to check with the place you intend on going. Some nightclubs and bars don’t allow fancy dress.
