Jun, '16Your first few weeks at university are crazy. You get to meet loads of different people, and it’s a time when students tend to party hard. When you are trying to make an impression on your fellow students, it’s easy to go too far or make a fool of yourself, especially where alcohol is concerned.
The mistakes you make in fresher's week won’t be forgotten, your uni mates will most likely tease you about them for the remainder of your time at university. Some mistakes are hilarious and can earn you respect, whereas others should probably be avoided, unless you want to stand out for all the wrong reasons. Here are some fresher’s fails you probably want to avoid if possible.Revealing TMI (too much info)
First off, make sure you don’t reveal information about yourself that other people really shouldn’t know. It can be tempting to disclose cheeky facts about yourself during ames of ‘I have never’ to show off a little, but you will probably regret disclosing personal info afterwards. It might get you a few laughs, but it will only hurt your reputation in the long run.
Before telling people stuff about yourself, consider whether you are giving away far too much information. It’s especially important nowadays, because information travels fast online via social media.Hooking up with a flat/housemate
Although this may seem like a good idea at the time. Do you really want to wake up the next morning and awkwardly greet your housemate outside the shower? Of course it’s not a sin to hook up with house or hall mates, but just consider whether it will make you feel uncomfortable afterwards. It’s best to consider potential suitors outside of your living environment, or things can get intense.Getting absolutely wasted
It’s inevitable (unless you don’t really like alcohol) that you will get very drunk at uni. However, try and avoid going too far. The last thing you want is to throw up everywhere, or worse, not be in control of your actions. It’s when you are far too wasted that you may do things you will most certainly regret the next morning. Know your limits and you will avoid embarrassment.Doing things you are not comfortable with
There’s a lot of peer pressure at uni. Expect your fellow housemates to egg you on to do silly things. However, it’s important to remember that you don’t have to do anything you don’t want to do. Have the strength to say no, and if you get ridiculed, then surround yourself with different people. Find friends who won’t put you in awkward situations.
Here’s some other things you should probably avoid -- Not using protection
- Not locking your bedroom door (leaves you vulnerable to pranks)
- Getting around too much (you don’t want that kind of reputation)
- Doing something stupid on video
- Not showing up to any lectures (it doesn’t make the best impression)
- Getting naked when drunk
- Drunk texting/phoning people or sending pictures you will later regret.
- Attempting ridiculous stunts whilst drunk (will probably result in hospital visit).
