Summer is over and the dark days are setting in...

There’s only one thing for it here at IconInc: a student cinema scare-fest. If you need an excuse to stay in and avoid the killer clown pranksters (we can think of many other names for them, but let’s go with that), we’ve got the perfect list of films that Netflix can help you with this Halloween.

Toffee apples and Netflix logins at the ready…

    Rear Window (1954)

It doesn’t get any more suspenseful than a classic from the Master of Suspense, Alfred Hitchcock. Rear Window, starring film icons James Stewart and Grace Kelly, will grab you by the eyeballs and drag you to the edge of your seat more captivatingly than any modern picture.

    World War Z (2013)

Max Brooks’ critically acclaimed fictional account of a zombie pandemic on planet earth turns into a multi-million dollar Hollywood blockbuster with Brad Pitt in the hot seat. What’s not to like?

    Pan’s Labyrinth (2006)

One of the more visually impressive horror films out there came from the fantastic mind of Guillermo del Toro. It’s won all sorts of Oscars and it will do all sorts of things to your mind at Halloween this year.

Wallace and Gromit: The Curse of the Were Rabbit (2005)

If you can’t take much horror, but you want to get into the theme of things this October, Wallace and Gromit might just be the tonic. The Curse of the Were Rabbit provides welcome respite from the dimly lit streets of a cold Halloween night.

What We Do in the Shadows (2014)

In what has been described as an instant cult classic, this mockumentary exudes a light-hearted theme injected with a healthy dose of darkness, so you can liven up your night on 31st October.

    The Addams Family (1991)

Is there a more enjoyable Halloween film than The Addams Family? The macabre classic doesn’t take itself seriously in the slightest, so it’s perfect for a night slobbing out in front of the tele in your pyjamas.

    Trollhunter (2010)

You won’t see many films like this. It’s got the handheld-camera style that made the Blair Witch Project such a hit, but with added Norwegian charm…and that charm goes a long way when you’re watching giant trolls come out of the trees…

    Jeepers Creepers (2001)

Talk about cult classics. In reality, it’s a terrible film, but it’s so bad that it’s good, especially at Halloween. Get your mates round, get your cocktails on and soak in a bit of early 00s cinema nostalgia with the original Jeepers Creepers.

    Scream (1996)

Easily one of the most memorable films of the 1990s, Scream is a watch-every-year kind of title. Halloween just isn’t the same without a tongue-in-cheek horror film about a serial killer who’s obsessed with horror films.

    Sharknado (2013)

It’s probably the worst film of all time and it knows it all too well. And that’s exactly why you need it in your life. Sharknado is another one of those instant-cult-classic films. Why? Because it’s about a tornado full of sharks that tosses them all over the streets of LA. What more could you want?

    Bonus film:

As part of our Halloween celebrations, we’ll be screening our favourite scary film in our students’ private cinema this year.

    The Exorcist (1973)

William Peter Blatty’s novel of the same name changed horror forever when it was turned into a Hollywood film. It’s often the marker for how good a horror film is and that’s why it needs to be watched every Halloween.
